Bellanca Hotel Catalina Island Completes Full Property Renovation & Name Change Under New Ownership

Bellanca Hotel located in the heart of Avalon, CA re-opened in July 2020 after completing a $4 million, year-long top to bottom renovation. Formerly known as the Hotel Villa Portofino, the revitalization includes guest room renovation, an expanded rooftop lounge, lobby update as well as the addition of 4 new guest rooms.

Remodel Highlights:

  • Existing Guest Rooms – new furniture, casegoods and fixtures with a fresh new look as well as upgraded HVAC and plumbing for 36 existing guestrooms.
  • Suite Upgrades – suites upgraded with private patios, all-new furniture, rain showers and gas fireplaces.
  • Additional Rooms – 4 new Cabana style rooms most with partial ocean views.
  • Naughty Fox Restaurant – the remodel includes the addition of a new restaurant concept, Naughty Fox. This new space features a large ocean view patio and a seafood heavy menu of small plates from Chef Russel Hayden.
  • Sun Deck – the sundeck was expanded and glass railings were installed to maximize the ocean views. A full service bar and F&B kiosk was added.
  • Lobby Revamp – the lobby was reconfigured to meet the needs of the modern traveler with a more spacious footprint and modern tech amenities.
  • New Identity – the hotel was renamed to Bellanca Hotel to reflect its modern design forward aesthetic.

The hotel’s comprehensive renovation was designed to showcase the property’s exclusive location in the center of Avalon, just footsteps to the crystal clear waters of Avalon Bay. Timbor wood and a soothing palette of emerald blue, marine green and nimbus white provide a respite from the mainland. The property renovation includes a design overhaul of the guestrooms. The new aesthetic by San Diego studio Second Sight Design features an airy, minimalistic look with new furniture, millwork, case goods, hand modeled tile and custom artwork. Brass keys, nautical flags and lateral woodwork are a nod to the sailboats dotting the views from the hotel. In addition, the lobby was expanded to create an inviting space that maximizes the view of Avalon Bay. On the rooftop, there is new furniture, lighting, decking and a full-service bar.

In addition to the fresh aesthetic, the property has a new name and brand identity, Bellanca Hotel. The word Bellanca is a combination of the Italian words bella (beautiful) and blanca (white), referencing Catalina’s reputation as “Mediterranean getaway in California”.

The property was acquired in 2017 by San Diego based operator Eat.Drink.Sleep.
